Job description

We are seeking an outstanding and motivated Consultant Physician in General Internal Medicine (GIM) with a Special Interest in Endocrinology to join our expanding clinical team.

This post offers an exciting opportunity to deliver comprehensive acute and general medical care alongside developing specialist outpatient services in Endocrinology and Diabetes Mellitus. The successful candidate will play a central role in driving high-quality inpatient management, shaping local endocrine pathways, and contributing to medical education and clinical research.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Services

  • General Internal Medicine: Lead inpatient care on acute medical wards, participate in the acute medical intake/take on-call rota, and perform daily consultant-led multidisciplinary ward rounds.

  • Specialist Endocrinology: Provide expert consultant-led outpatient clinics covering general endocrinology, thyroid disorders, adrenal/pituitary pathology, calcium metabolic disorders, and complex diabetes.

  • Consultation & Liaison: Provide specialist advice and inpatient consults to the Emergency Department, ICU, surgical teams, and referring regional specialties.

  • Multidisciplinary Leadership: Collaborate closely with diabetes specialist nurses, endocrine nurses, dietitians, clinical biochemists, and endocrine surgeons.

Teaching, Audit & Governance

  • Supervise, mentor, and assess trainees, registrars, and medical students.

  • Lead and support clinical audits, service development projects, and quality improvement (QI) initiatives within GIM and Endocrinology.

  • Participate in departmental clinical governance, morbidity and mortality reviews, and risk management activities

Job requirements

Essential Requirements

  • Professional Registration: Full registration on the Specialist Register of the relevant Medical Council / GMC in both General Internal Medicine and Endocrinology & Diabetes Mellitus (or be within 6 months of CCT / CSD eligibility).

  • Higher Specialist Training: Completion of a recognized Higher Specialist Training program in GIM and Endocrinology.

  • Certifications: Current Advanced Life Support (ALS / ACLS) certification.

  • Clinical Experience: Proven clinical expertise in acute unselected medical takes and complex endocrine outpatient management.

Desirable Attributes

  • Higher academic degree (MD, PhD, or equivalent) or active research portfolio in Endocrinology/Diabetes.

  • Subspecialty expertise in areas such as neuroendocrinology, reproductive endocrinology, or thyroid cancer.

  • Demonstrated experience in clinical leadership, service design, or medical education roles.
