Job description

Our client is seeking an experienced and dedicated Locum Consultant in Obstetrics & Gynaecology to join their dynamic and multidisciplinary team.

The Locum Consultant will provide high-quality, evidence-based care to women throughout all stages of pregnancy and gynaecological health. The role includes inpatient and outpatient responsibilities, participation in labour ward cover, operating lists, emergency care, and multidisciplinary collaboration.

The consultant will also contribute to the training and supervision of NCHDs (Non-Consultant Hospital Doctors) and be involved in clinical governance, audit, and quality improvement within the department.

Clinical Responsibilities:

  • Deliver consultant-level care in both obstetrics and gynaecology.

  • Provide cover for the labour ward and manage high-risk pregnancies.

  • Conduct antenatal, postnatal, and gynaecology clinics.

  • Perform elective and emergency gynaecological procedures in theatre.

  • Participate in multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings for complex obstetric or oncological cases.

  • Share in the obstetric and gynaecology on-call rota, including nights and weekends.

Teaching and Training:

  • Supervise, support, and mentor NCHDs and medical students.

  • Contribute to ongoing professional development and departmental teaching.

  • Promote a culture of continuous learning and clinical excellence.

Quality and Governance:

  • Participate in clinical audit, incident review, morbidity and mortality meetings.

  • Contribute to the development of clinical protocols and pathways in line with national guidelines (e.g., HIQA, RCPI).

  • Maintain accurate, comprehensive clinical documentation using hospital systems.

Administrative Duties:

  • Attend consultant meetings and contribute to service planning and delivery.

  • Liaise effectively with midwives, nursing staff, anaesthetists, paediatricians, and other relevant specialties.

  • Adhere to hospital policies, data protection, and patient confidentiality standards.

Job requirements

  • Registration with the Irish Medical Council on the Specialist Division for Obstetrics and Gynaecology.

  • Extensive experience in both obstetrics and gynaecology at senior (consultant or equivalent) level.

  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills.

  • Competency in managing emergencies and high-risk obstetric cases.
