Job description

Woodston Personnel are seeking a qualified and experienced Consultant in Transfusion Medicine to join a leading healthcare institution in Saudi Arabia. The Consultant is responsible for providing expert clinical, laboratory, and advisory services related to blood transfusion and patient blood management. The role includes oversight of transfusion practices, ensuring safe and effective use of blood components, supporting clinical teams, maintaining regulatory compliance, and contributing to education, quality improvement, and research activities.

Duties and Responsbilities

  • Provide specialist clinical advice on transfusion practice, complex transfusion cases, and adverse transfusion reactions.

  • Support patient blood management (PBM) programs, including optimization of transfusion thresholds and alternatives to transfusion.

  • Participate in multidisciplinary case discussions involving high-risk transfusions (e.g., massive transfusion, alloimmunization, neonatal and obstetric cases).

  • Lead investigation, management, and reporting of transfusion reactions and incidents.

  • Oversee transfusion laboratory operations, including blood grouping, compatibility testing, antibody investigations, and component issue.

  • Ensure appropriate storage, handling, and traceability of blood components in compliance with national and international standards.

  • Contribute to validation, implementation, and review of laboratory methods, equipment, and information systems.

  • Support donor–recipient compatibility and rare blood management where applicable.

  • Ensure compliance with regulatory, accreditation, and hemovigilance requirements.

  • Lead or contribute to transfusion committees and governance meetings.

  • Develop, review, and implement transfusion policies, guidelines, and standard operating procedures.

  • Participate in audits, risk management, and continuous quality improvement initiatives.

  • Provide education and training to medical, nursing, laboratory, and allied health staff on transfusion practices and patient blood management.

  • Supervise and mentor trainees, fellows, and laboratory staff as appropriate.

  • Contribute to institutional education programs and continuing professional development activities.

  • Participate in or lead clinical and laboratory research in transfusion medicine.

  • Contribute to publications, presentations, and professional meetings where appropriate.

  • Maintain professional development and stay current with advances in transfusion medicine.

Job requirements

MBBS or equivalent medical qualification

US Board/ FRCS - Irish, UK, Canadian, New Zealand or Australian/ Diploma d'Etudes Specialises (DES)/ CIS French Board/ Fachart & Sub- Board/ Fellowship / Board / Fellowship / Sweden / Belgium / Finland / Spain

Must have at least 3-5 years of post-consultant or senior specialist experience

Eligible for consultant licensure with the Saudi Commission for Health Specialties (SCFHS)
